Truly a club for all seasons, MSYC is located on beautiful Mt.
Sinai Harbor just east of Port Jefferson Harbor. The clubhouse is available to members for private parties. Long Island Sound
swimming is available at Cedar Beach directly across the street, a
short
walk from the club.
Incorporated in 1964, the founders of Mt. Sinai Yacht Club
envisioned a place where working people would share a common love of
recreational boating in a family oriented place that fostered an atmosphere
of hospitality and a safe haven to boaters of the Long Island
Sound. Initial meetings were held at the Old Fire House in Mt.
Sinai. The club organizers negotiated a lease with the Tuthill
family for a strip of land 150 feet wide , running north to south
along Mt. Sinai Harbor. Today, the property is leased from the
Town of Brookhaven.
In August of
1966, the search for a clubhouse led to a barge in the Delhart
Shipyard on Staten Island. Originally belonging to the Baltimore
and Ohio railroad, the retired reefer barge had been built to
carry fruits and vegetables under iced conditions. Negotiations on
behalf of the club were entered into by the McCormach Sand and
Gravel Company, and brought the asking price from $1,500.00 down
to $800.00. The price included a 36' x 10' float and towing to Mt.
Sinai Harbor. Once delivered, engineers, carpenters and other club
members spent many hours turning the barge into an attractive
clubhouse.
The float
became the club's first docking facility which was quickly
outgrown as membership rose. Six slips in 1966 gave way to a 36
slip marina which was in turn replaced by an attractive, modern
99 slip floating-dock marina providing water, electric power,
telephone lines and a gas and diesel fuel dock.
Composed of
family and individual memberships, boaters and non-boaters,
members and their guests are welcome to enjoy the wide range of
year round activities offered by MSYC. The members of MSYC use
good spirit and old-fashioned hard work to make the original
vision a reality. Construction of a new clubhouse
was completed in October of 2003
and is now being fully utilized and enjoyed by our members.
